Author: Reza Amirkhani
Publisher: Ofoq Publishing
GheyDAR is a novel by Reza Amirkhani, set in the streets of old Tehran. It explores themes of honor, loyalty, and the traditional looti (local hero) culture. According to the author, the character of GheyDAR is a free interpretation of the legendary wrestler Gholamreza Takhti. GheyDAR is portrayed as a Tehran man who owns a garage filled with heavy vehicles. Through his story, Amirkhani seeks to revive the moral virtues of the past, values he believes are fading in today’s society. GheyDAR embodies these principles: a noble, selfless man who pursues anonymity and represents a code of honor largely absent in the modern world.
The novel is structured into nine chapters, each narrating a distinct episode from GheyDAR’s life. Its atmosphere closely resembles Amirkhani’s earlier work, Man Oo (“Me and Him”), and even shares some characters, suggesting that the author is weaving his own imaginative universe. To depict pre-revolutionary Tehran, Amirkhani employs archaic expressions and a distinctive linguistic style, which may feel unfamiliar to younger readers, particularly in the first chapter. Gradually, the language becomes more natural, and the characters grow more nuanced. The most compelling part of the novel is Chapter 9, but its full impact can only be appreciated after reading the preceding eight chapters.
