Her Eyes
Author: Bozorg Alavi
Publisher: Negah Publishing
The novel Her Eyes, written by Bozorg Alavi, was first published in 1952 (1331 SH). From its initial release, it was recognized as one of the landmark works of contemporary Iranian literature and has been reprinted multiple times. With a mysterious and captivating narrative, the novel intertwines themes of love, art, and politics.
The story revolves around the life and suspicious death of Master Makan, a painter, activist, and freedom-seeker. The narrator attempts to uncover the secret hidden within Makan’s famous painting, Her Eyes. This search leads to a woman named Farangis, through whose perspective the hidden layers of the master’s life and the socio-political atmosphere of the time are revealed.
Her Eyes goes beyond a simple love story, offering a critical portrayal of Iranian society during the Pahlavi era—a society where art, love, and individual freedom were constrained by power and authoritarianism.
Through symbolism, particularly the motif of eyes as a sign of mystery, perception, and emotion, the novel explores human psychology and complex interpersonal relationships. Its fluid prose, mystery-driven structure, and deep connection between personal feelings and social issues make it one of the most enduring Persian novels.
Literarily, Her Eyes is a successful example of a social-psychological novel, in which characters are gradually developed through memory, confession, and reflection on the past. Bozorg Alavi’s clever choice of viewpoint and indirect narration engages the reader in the process of discovering the truth, compelling them to judge between love, sacrifice, selfishness, and idealism. This layered narrative and rich characterization ensure that the novel remains readable, thought-provoking, and open to fresh interpretations even decades after its publication.
