Tales from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh
Author: Mahnaz Taheri
Publisher: Sepehrin Publication
The book Tales from Shahnameh is based on the stories of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh. It presents the key points and themes of the original work in simple, clear language, while keeping the essence of the stories faithful to Ferdowsi’s vision. The prose has been adapted to make it accessible and enjoyable for readers, helping them develop an interest in this invaluable Persian literary masterpiece.
The Shahnameh is the true guardian of Iranian national traditions and identity. Without this great work, many positive elements of our ancestral culture might have been lost through the storms of history, leaving little trace behind.
The Shahnameh narrates the eternal struggle between good and evil, with heroes and warriors as the central figures in this cosmic battle. Ferdowsi’s perspective always supports justice and virtue against oppression and corruption. Iran, as the land of the free, has often faced hardships and attacks from neighboring powers. Its beauty and grandeur, while a source of pride, also expose it to danger. Consequently, its heroes rise to defend the land, its people, and its profound human values, often sacrificing their own lives in the process.
Some heroes of the Shahnameh are exemplary figures who dedicate their lives to the welfare of others. Heroes like Fereydun, Siavash, Keykhosrow, Rostam, Goudarz, and Tous belong to this category.
A passage from the book:
Rostam and his horse Rakhsh were exhausted; they could no longer move and fell to the ground, barely conscious, staring death in the face. After a while, Rostam rose and sat on the ground, raising his hands in prayer, saying: “O Great God, I want to save the Iranians from the demons. Help me.” At that moment, he heard the bleating of a sheep rushing past them. He thought: “This animal must have found water nearby. There must be a spring close.” And so he set off, following the sheep.
