The Stories of Kalila and Dimna
Adapted by: Alireza Taheri
Publisher: Sepehrin Publication
Kalila and Dimna was originally written about two thousand years ago by an Indian scholar in Sanskrit. Borzūya, a physician and scholar during the reign of Khosrow Anushirvan, the Sassanian king, brought the book from India to Iran and translated it into Pahlavi. The book contains valuable moral tales and life lessons, narrated through the voices of two jackals named Kalila and Dimna.
In this adaptation, the stories have been rewritten in simple, child-friendly language so that they are accessible and useful for children and teenagers. The moral lessons and ethical principles of the original work are preserved in a way that young readers can understand and enjoy.
A passage from the book:
Long ago, at the foot of a great mountain, many trees grew, and numerous birds made their nests in them. Among them were a crow and a partridge, who had just arrived in the area and quickly became close friends. One early morning, the partridge went out to find food and did not return. Days passed with no sign of her. The crow searched everywhere but could not find her. He thought: Perhaps she couldn’t find her way back and got lost, or maybe she built a nest somewhere else. Now alone, the crow kept himself busy to feel less lonely. One day, a mouse passed by, saw the empty nest of the partridge, liked it, and decided to make it his home.
